Hertfordshire Schools Choose Education for All

Posted: Monday 19 November, 2007

HCC were enlightened enough to recognise that there is a 'cost' to general school skipping in real terms to the environment and, not to mention, the cost of the missed opportunity they have in advancing education to under-privileged communities across the world with unwanted items from Hertfordshire Schools. They have supported EfA starting with a pilot scheme at Streamwoods Primary School in Hatfield where the following items were collected:

32 cupboards

9 shelving units

30 student chairs

14 book cases

8 student desks

1 piano

1 office desk

4 tray unit

At the moment, school classroom clearance, on a day to day basis, is regarded as domestic and municipal waste so it is by far cheaper and most expedient for the school to skip unwanted books, chairs, tables, sports equipment etc in to landfill skips.

Hopefully the action by Hertfordshire to pay EfA for clearance and re-distribution of unwanted items will enable schools across the county see their unwanted items being re-used in under-privileged communities across the world.
