Feet for Feet Challenge

Posted: Wednesday 19 August, 2009

'Feet for Feet' is an idea devised and by Simon and Anthony Devine who were both born in Holbrook, Derbyshire the most southerly village of the Pennine chain. Combining their love of walking and the great outdoors and a wish to help underprivileged children in rural Tanzania they decided to walk the Pennine Way. This is a total distance of 268 miles which they planned to complete in twelve days. They each carried a red school chair with them.

The idea behind this and the walk is to highlight the long distances these children have to travel to get to school and then have to sit on makeshift furniture or even on the floor. In addition to the enormity of this challenge, Simon and Anthony only drank water from natural sources found along the way using the “life straw”, a filtration kit used in humanitarian crisis' where water quality is poor or not fit for consumption.

The walk began at Edale in Derbyshire on 31 July and was due to finish in Kirk Yethom in the Scottish borders on 11 August.

The sponsorship money raised will to towards shipping school furniture and “life straws” into rural Tanzanian schools.

The launch of this event is took place at the despatch warehouse of Education for All, where a container of school resources was sent to Tanzania, supported by the Tanzanian High Commission, to raise awareness here, and in Tanzania, of this event and Education for All's aims. The container held over 500 pupils worth of desks and chairs and was kindly loaded by staff from Thorpe Kilworth Limited.

A big thank you to everyone who has already logged on to educationforall.com and donated!

Sorry if it seems we haven't been in touch but we suffered with lack of signal out in the wilderness!
After even more rain and an ever increasing blister count and a heavily strapped ankle, the distance and weather took its toll. So its with deep regret we had to call it a day 36 hours (and about 80 miles) before our scheduled end destination.

Although we missed our target by hours please keep logging on to www.educationforall.com and donate some money...so far we have pledges for just over £1,000.

Thank you!
